Seun Kuti, the Nigerian Afrobeat singer and son of the late music legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has been detained at the State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department (SCIID) in Panti, Yaba, Lagos.
Interestingly, he has assumed the role of ‘General Overseer’ within his cell, a title bestowed upon him by fellow inmates who have even presented him with a Bible as a symbol of his new position.
However, this coronation faced initial resistance from the other inmates when Kuti was first placed in the cell after being arrested on May 13.
The arrest stemmed from allegations of him slapping a police officer, which led to the circulation of a viral video and a warrant issued by Inspector-General of Police Alkali Baba.

Upon entering the cell, the other inmates initially reacted aggressively and demanded his removal.
Nevertheless, Kuti managed to defuse the tension by offering the inmates a sum of N25,000, which he arranged for his wife to deliver.
This gesture ultimately secured his acceptance among the inmates and provided him with a place to sit.
Sources close to the situation, as reported by Vanguard, shared that in response to the challenging circumstances, Kuti has refused to eat any food given to him, including meals brought by his wife.
