FC Barcelona and Spanish left-back Jordi Alba have reached an agreement to mutually terminate their contractual relationship, despite the defender having one season remaining on his contract with the club.
Consequently, after the conclusion of the 2022-2023 season, Jordi Alba, who joined FC Barcelona from Valencia in 2012, will no longer be a part of the esteemed Spanish club.
During his time with Barcelona, the 34-year-old Spain international has achieved remarkable success, including six La Liga championships, five Copa del Rey titles, and the 2015 Champions League triumph.
Alba has made a total of 458 appearances for the Catalan side, including 29 matches in the most recent La Liga campaign.
“FC Barcelona would like to publicly express its gratitude to Alba for his professionalism, commitment, and dedication, and his ever-positive and friendly relationship with all members of the Barca family, and wishes him every fortune in the future”, the club announced on the club’s official website on Wednesday, May 24.
“Barca will always be a home for you, Jordi.”
The recent news of Jordi Alba’s departure from FC Barcelona follows closely on the heels of the club captain Sergio Busquets’ announcement that he will also be leaving at the end of the current season.
These veteran players’ exits align with Barcelona’s ongoing efforts to restructure the club in compliance with La Liga’s financial fair play regulations.
In their pursuit of financial stability, Barcelona initiated various measures before the start of this season.
They sold their interests in Barca Studios, the media production company, as well as future television rights, generating funds to facilitate the acquisition of four new players.
Additionally, in order to secure the signing of Jules Kounde, a French defender from Sevilla, the club had to part ways with more players.
Despite the financial challenges they are facing, FC Barcelona remains determined to strengthen their squad by actively pursuing new players, including the potential return of their iconic forward Lionel Messi during the upcoming summer transfer window.
