Seun Kuti, the son of the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, was involved in a confrontation with a police officer that was caught on video. In the video, Seun is seen approaching the officer aggressively and pushing him on the chest. Another angle of the video shows Seun slapping the officer while using disrespectful language. The officer, despite being slapped, remained calm and shocked.
He was heard saying: “You dey craze? You dey mad?”
According to the video, it seems that Seun was stopped by the officer on the highway, possibly for a routine check.
A human rights lawyer named Festus Ogun condemned the incident, calling it an assault that should be punished by law. Ogun stated that there was no justification for the assault, especially against a law enforcement officer who maintained his composure despite provocation.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, initially stated that he had not seen the viral video.
However, later on, a statement from CSP Adejobi confirmed that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Baba Alkali, had ordered the immediate arrest of Seun Kuti.
The statement mentioned that an investigation would be conducted into the incident and Seun Kuti would be prosecuted. It emphasized that the police force would not tolerate any form of aggression towards police officers or the law.
