Man Utd forward Mason Greenwood hasn’t trained or played for the club since January 2022, but the 21-year-old has been given fresh hope of a return with Erik ten Hag giving his ‘approval.’
Mason Greenwood is reportedly delighted with some of his Manchester United team-mates and manager being open to his return.
Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag has reportedly made it clear he is happy for Greenwood to return to the side after his charges of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour were dropped in February.
Greenwood has not played nor trained with his team-mates since his arrest back in January 2022, though The Sun claim that most of his playing colleagues would welcome him back into the side.
It is also said the 21-year-old is overjoyed at the possibility of his return, though he is desperate for a final decision to be made by the United hierarchy within the next week.
A source told The Sun: “Mason was delighted to hear that the manager and most of his team-mates would welcome him back.
“He firmly believes he is an innocent man and is very frustrated he’s not been able to play. He understands that the club have had to carry out an investigation, but he feels like his career is slipping by.
“He and his team have made clear to United that they now want to know what is happening. They have basically said, ‘sack him or back him.’”
Despite the Englishman’s positivity, a potential Greenwood return to Old Trafford is expected to spark outrage across the game.
Among those eager for him to permanently leave the club are members of the Manchester United Women’s team, who reportedly objected against his return earlier this year.
United’s decision will also come down to whether club executives believe there will be a backlash by sponsors and commercial deals if he features in their famous red jersey again.
Club bosses began their own investigation into the circumstances which resulted in his arrest in early 2022, after a woman made a series of allegations against him.
Greenwood, who is set to become a father with his partner, has awaited a decision from the club for 18 weeks as key witnesses withdrew their evidence from the case.
