Reiss Nelson reportedly on the verge of finalizing a fresh contract with Arsenal

Reports suggest that Reiss Nelson, the Arsenal forward, is close to reaching an agreement for a new contract with the Gunners.

Nelson, 23, has faced injury setbacks throughout the 2022-23 season, and limited playing time due to the impressive performances of Bukayo Saka under manager Mikel Arteta.

However, despite his reduced minutes on the field, Nelson has proven his worth as a valuable substitute, contributing three goals and two assists in cameo appearances in the current Premier League campaign.

Nelson’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and initial discussions for a renewal have not yielded positive results.

Despite rejecting two previous contract offers, the former England Under-21 international has expressed his desire to remain at the club.

It is now believed that Arsenal and Nelson’s representatives are close to reaching an agreement on a new four-year contract, extending until the conclusion of the 2026-27 season, with an additional one-year extension option.

The Athletic reports that Arsenal recognizes Nelson’s significance to the squad and has rewarded him with a long-term deal.

The attacker is expected to reject interest from other Premier League clubs such as AC Milan, Brighton & Hove Albion, Fulham, and West Ham United, as well as potential suitors abroad, in order to continue his career in the red and white of Arsenal.

Nelson, who has been associated with Arsenal since joining their Hale End academy in 2007, has made 65 appearances for the senior team, scoring seven goals and providing seven assists.

He has also enjoyed successful loan spells with Hoffenheim and Feyenoord, with the latter reaching the final of the Europa Conference League last year.

If Nelson finalizes the new contract, he will join the ranks of Saka, Aaron Ramsdale, Gabriel Martinelli, and Gabriel Magalhaes, who have all recently extended their contracts at Arsenal.

The club is also actively working on contract extensions for William Saliba and captain Martin Odegaard.

Although Nelson was absent from the squad in Arsenal’s recent 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest due to illness, there are expectations of his return for the season finale against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Emirates on Sunday.
